THE THIINGS OF OTHERNESS.
by- Tharindi Dilshika
Society as a design context , our new design project started with a lecture held by archt.Sithuini Rathnamala. The concept 'OTHERNESS' really opened my thoughts towards people and different social statuses. How we people framed into man made 'normal' how society sees people when they are different from that.
nowadays in society those gender identities taking a very serious situation. In social media to normal regular chats these topics like LGBTQ+ , Transgender held a bigger place. Some people are really against that while some are totally agree or and some can stay nutral. However these things emphasize the otherness among society. When people feel like this is a Thing of Otherness they try to exclude them. But when we consider them as same as us. same humans we can respect them equally. It will make a comfortable environment for all of us.
Then Mr. Sithumini gave out this totally relatable topic. 'Gift From A Sibling'.
Just think about we received a gift from our sibling. But instead of giving what i like ,sibling have got us what they like. Maybe he/she thought that 'oh I really love this one, so i should gift her this' and also he did something very thoughtful. But what he missed is a little thought. What if she doesn't like it as mush as i like it. What if our tastes are different. If he could've thought like that the gift could be more thoughtful as he thought in our POV.
this was really simple thing to understand but through this we can understand various tastes of people and how to understand them in their point of view.
After this gifting talk we moved into a interesting game type topic we'll call it as 'Alien Experience'. we were asked to choose a specific place and think about we going there for the first time as an alien. we choosed the temple of tooth in Kandy. and this alien doesn't know colors, stairs, or any sacred objects. Like a new world to a baby.
This activity kind of opened my eyes about every religions. how my religious things can be just things for other religions and how i see their religious things. It can be a Thing of otherness too But if we can see in their view we start to respect every religions.
the final task was to 'move away from dominant assumptions' we tried to create a design that not only cares about humans but about nature too. As the nature helds a big role of our life we can't just ignore the nature and create our designs.so this final talk was about respecting nature's value and understanding natural needs. Because we cannot survive without this nature.
So i have to write that as a first step for our new design project we kind of like stepped into a wide social area that we never really concerned before.
Nice work !
